In what is most likely related to the slew of Google mobile updates dubbed as Pigeon, some in the SEO community have noticed site description overlays in mobile search results.
Site description overlays were first noticed on desktops earlier in the year (see below for example). The snippets of information display a short description of the website’s domain or brand.
Although we haven’t been able to replicate the results seen in mobile SERPs, Northeastern Exterminators has shared images of the new update.
When the grey box to the right of the search result is tapped, information regarding the author (Yelp) is revealed. See below:
With these updates coming in quick succession and Google making Authorship markup arguably obsolete, this may be a new means of giving users a quick and easy way to verify author or site authority.
